Located just outside of New York City, with schools in both Glen Rock and in Teaneck, New Jersey, is International Chess Academy (ICA), a privately-owned Chess school established in 1996 with the aim of providing professional chess instruction in a nurturing environment to students of all levels (beginner, advanced, and master level). Programs include: chess classes and tournaments for all ages and levels, as well as master classes taught by Grandmaster instructors.

While this chess school may be a good fit for older children (around 10 years and up), my experience with their program for younger kids--specifically 5-6-year-olds--was disappointing. My 6-year-old son enjoys playing chess at home and was initially very excited to attend. However, his enthusiasm quickly faded, and I was equally dissatisfied.<br><br>The instructor assigned to his age group lacked the engagement and approach needed to teach young children. There was no positive reinforcement, encouragement, or effort to make the learning process fun--no rewards system, no creative explanations, nothing to spark interest. The sessions were dull, and the instructor was noticeably quiet and disengaged, which made the environment uninviting for kids at that developmental stage.<br><br>My son soon didn't want to attend anymore, saying it was boring. I raised these concerns directly with Diana but was told they wouldn't be changing the instructor. On top of that, the classroom was often noisy

Good afternoon Henry,<br><br>I would like to apologize for the experience you received. I would like to let you, and other parents, know about the changes we have made over the last semester, as well as the direction our school is heading towards.<br><br>We now have a detailed curriculum which shows parents, coaches, and students clear progression. For each level, students have to master specific skills, which are grouped into norms. Our next evolution will be to give each student a certificate,

Went for the first time with my 10yr old son today. He loved it. The instructors are patient and engaged. He's been playing chess on his own online and was excited to play with other kids his age. We're definitely signing up for more classes. Thanks to ICA for providing this amazing chess club for kids.

Wow where to begin? After enrolling my eldest, Michael, at ICA Teaneck 3 years ago, he has accomplished so much! My son was 19th in the nation for 1st grade Online Scholastic Championships during CoVid, 6th in NJ State Scholastic Championships in fall of 2nd grade and now 4th in NJ State spring of 2nd grade. In addition, my middle son, Maxim, placed 7th in NJ state for Kindergarteners. ICA has a strong youth chess community and they're super active with weekly chess tournaments(in-person &virtual). They cater to beginners and future masters alike and their instructors have a wealth of knowledge and talent! We love their winter and summer camps and haven't missed a single summer camp season post-CoVid.
