Filmed in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic, the film follows Alvarez's journey from a privileged Dominican childhood to a New York exile that fueled one of America's most influential literary careers. Her 1994 novel In the Time of the Butterflies sold over a million copies and exposed the world to life under dictator Rafael Trujillo, a legacy she still builds at 74 with her latest acclaimed novel. What does it mean to belong to two homelands at once, and turn that in-between space into art that speaks for millions?
