Self-taught and largely untrained, Copley built his reputation on portraits so precise they captured both the likeness and the stature of sitters like Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams. As revolution brewed at home, Copley left for London in 1774, frustrated by the colonies' limited art scene, where he turned to dramatic, large-scale history paintings that brought current events to a mass audience, often distributed as prints for the general public.
